Hooked on a Feeling.
Q: Can you feel someone through a wall?
Update : got it in my head that energy is travelling
A: “The spectacle in general, as the concrete inversion of life, is the autonomous movement of the non-living” –Guy Debord, The Society of the Spectacle
You have become caught within the spectacle (not that you could avoid it, since it encompasses the present moment in a totality), and perhaps that is what you are “feeling.” You see, industrial production has perpetuated the image at the sake of the thing, thus producing a spectacular arrangement of images/relations that have replaced reality. Perhaps you are so attuned to the spectacle, that you are able to sense the presence (or rather absent-presence) of the Other beyond the wall.
Though the spectacle functions primarily through vision (it is, after all, a system of surfaces, images reflecting nothing), this could colonize your other senses. We have already seen industrial production enter the brave new world of “scent branding” and “spatial branding,” so why not textural branding? Regardless, you are not “feeling” the Other (or its “energy,” whatever the hell that is) through the wall; you are feeling a representation of the Other mediated by the spectacle. You do not feel because you are; you are because you feel.
You don’t seem to be distressed by this, however, you should be.
